LA Slice number 5

LA Slice number 5

The La Brea Tar Pits and  Museum

The La Brea Tar Pits are a group of tar pits around which Hancock Park was formed in urban Los Angeles. Natural asphalt (also called asphaltum, bitumen, pitch or tar—brea in Spanish) has seeped up from the ground in this area for tens of thousands of years. The tar is often covered with dust, leaves, or water. Over many centuries, the tar preserved the bones of animals that were trapped. The George C. Page Museum is dedicated to researching the tar pits and displaying specimens from the animals that died there. The La Brea Tar Pits are a registered National Natural Landmark.

You can see circles in the water, this is where tar is bubbling up from below.

Small tar bubbles appear randomly on the grassy areas of the park.  One must be careful they will spit at you!

Looks like an innocent pool of water.

Until you look more closely!

I enjoyed these birds.  You need to look closely and you will notice that the skeleton of the bird is set in front of a picture of itself.

LACMA is the largest art museum in the western United States.  It holds more than 150,000 works spanning the history of art from ancient times to the present. In addition to art exhibits, the museum features film and concert series.  Due to time constraints we were only able to tour small parts of this amazing museum. We enjoyed items like “Urban Light” ....
