Forest
Park – St. Louis
Forest
Park is a treasured resource in St. Louis and it is absolutely beautiful. It
officially opened to the public on June 24, 1876, and is one of the largest
urban parks in the United States. At around 1,300 acres it is bigger than
Central Park in New York. We spent
several days there and plan to return to St. Louis in the future to spend some
more time there! It is home to the
region’s major cultural institutions – the Zoo, Art Museum, Missouri History
Museum, Science Center, Muny Opera, Boathouse, Steinberg Skating Rink, Dwight
Davis Tennis Center, Probstein and Highlands golf courses. It also serves
a sports center for golf, tennis, baseball, cycling, fishing, soccer, rugby,
running, walking and more. So, to get
started we spent a day at the History Museum.
Have a look …
In 1929 Mexican president Emilio Portes Gil gave the Lindbergh's one of the largest and most interesting gifts they had ever received: 'Flores Mexicanas'. Gil purchased the painting from master artist Alfredo Ramos Martinez, who had spent more than 15 years working on it. As the place they first met, Mexico held a special significance for the couple. For the Mexican government the gift was an opportunity to generate further goodwill with the unofficial ambassadors of the United States.
The Muny
Opera was closed but we managed to get back stage for a view from ‘on stage’
looking out on the audience seating.
Totally awesome!
We also
enjoyed the Jewel Box … What is the Jewel Box you ask? Well, I think the photos speak for themselves
…
